Perspective

Perspective controls the point of view from which your articles are written. You can set the perspective at the cluster level or individually for each article.

Perspective options

Machined offers the following perspective options:

  • First person singular: I, me, my, mine
  • First person plural: We, us, our, ours
  • Second person: You, your, yours
  • Third person: He, she, they, it

Choosing a perspective

The right perspective depends on the type of content you're writing and your relationship with your audience.

First person singular works well for:

  • Personal stories and experiences
  • Opinion pieces
  • Individual expertise or advice

Example: "In my experience, the best way to approach this is..."

First person plural works well for:

  • Brand or company content
  • Team perspectives
  • Inclusive, community-focused content

Example: "We believe that the best approach is..."

Second person works well for:

  • How-to guides and tutorials
  • Direct advice and instructions
  • Engaging the reader directly

Example: "You can improve your results by..."

Third person works well for:

  • Objective, factual content
  • News and reporting
  • Academic or formal content

Example: "Experts recommend that users approach this by..."

Setting perspective

You can set the default perspective when creating a cluster, which will apply to all articles in that cluster. You can also override the perspective for individual articles if needed.

Perspective and voice

When you use voices, the perspective is automatically set to match the voice. For example:

  • The "Best Friend" voice uses first person with an empathetic tone
  • The "Journalist" voice uses third person with a confident tone

You can still manually adjust the perspective if needed.
