AI model
Machined.ai can write your articles with models from three providers: OpenAI, Anthropic and Google. You choose the model for each article or cluster article, and you can set a default for each project.

The label after each model is a rough guide:
- Balanced: a strong all-round choice
- Fast: quicker and lighter
- Stable: an earlier, well-established model
- Premium: the most capable model available
The default is GPT-5.4.
OpenAI
GPT models from OpenAI. A reliable choice for high-quality, well-structured content across most topics and content types.
Anthropic
Claude models from Anthropic. Known for strong reasoning and natural-sounding prose.
Google
Gemini models from Google. A good option for factual content and broad topic coverage.
Which models you can use
- Hosted plans (Launch, Growth, Pro and Scale): every model is available.
- BYOK plan: an OpenRouter key unlocks every model. Otherwise, you can use the models from each provider you've added a key for.
- Legacy plans: OpenAI models only.

Selecting a model
On a single article
In the New article sheet, open Model & output under Advanced settings and choose a Model.
On a cluster
Each article in the cluster has its own model, on the General tab of the cluster table. You can change one article, or set every article at once from the column header. See Creating clusters.
As a project default
Set Model under Project settings → Writing defaults → Content. Every new article and cluster article then starts with that model. See Writing defaults.
If your default model stops being available, for example because you removed an API key, new articles fall back to the standard model and Machined tells you.
Research
Deep research doesn't depend on the writing model you choose. It runs real-time web searches to ground your content in current information. See Research.
Cost
On a hosted plan, each article counts as one against your monthly allowance, whichever model you use.
On the BYOK plan, you pay your provider for what you use, and costs vary by provider and model. Check your provider's pricing page for current rates. Research and images add to your provider costs.
