Adding images

There are two ways to add images to your articles: automatically when the article is written, or afterwards in the editor.

During article creation​

When creating a single article, open the Media section under Advanced settings:

  • Featured image: generates a hero image, used as the article's main thumbnail
  • Article images: adds images throughout the article body

Expand Image settings to choose a Provider and, for AI providers, a Style. See Image providers and Image styles.

For clusters, use the Media tab of the cluster table to choose which images each article gets. You can also turn images on for the whole project in writing defaults, under Media.

Things to know​

  • Stock photos are for the featured image only. Images in the article body must use an AI provider. If you turn on article images while a stock provider is selected, Machined switches to an AI provider for you.
  • The number of article images is automatic. Longer articles get more images, up to 5, and each one is placed after a relevant section.
  • Images are landscape. Generated images are always landscape.

In the editor​

After an article is written, you can add and manage images in the Media section of the right panel in the editor.

Click Add media to open the media picker, which has four tabs:

Upload​

Drag and drop or browse to upload your own images (PNG, JPG or WebP, up to 5MB each).

Pexels and Unsplash​

Search for free stock photos.

AI Generate​

Describe the image you want, choose a provider and click Generate Image. Preview the result, then click Add to Folder to keep it.

Images you add go into the article's media folder, which holds up to 10 images. From the folder you can:

  • Insert into article
  • Set as featured image
  • Remove from folder

If YouTube videos were added to the article, they're listed in the Media section too.

Stock photo credits​

When you use a stock photo from Pexels or Unsplash, Machined credits the photographer in line with each provider's requirements. Inserting a stock photo into the article adds a "Photo by … on …" credit line beneath it. The featured image's credit is carried through when you publish or export the article.
